ASWB Exam

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) administers the Social Work licensing exam. If you want to be any social worker, you need to get licensed. The exams differ based on your prior education and experience. Professionals who pass the exam show they have the knowledge and skills to succeed in the specific field of social worker. There are five sub-categories in ASWB certification that are as follows

1. The Associate ASWB Exam – this requires no degree
2. The Bachelors ASWB Exam – this exam requires a bachelor’s degree in social work
3. The Masters ASWB Exam – this exam requires a master’s degree in social work
4. The Advanced Generalist ASWB Exam – this requires a master’s degree in social work and two years of nonclinical experience
5. The Clinical ASWB Exam – this requires a master’s degree in social work and two years of clinical experience

ASWB Test Structure, Duration and Necessary Information

All of the ASWB exam categories (Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, Clinical) have the same format, meaning that each has the same number of questions but the difficulty varies in all categories like (basic vs clinical). The exam is computer-based having 170 multiple-choice questions and you will have a total of 4 hours to complete. You can take a brief restroom break or go to drink water, but the clock does not stop and these activities will be included in your 4 hours limit. 

You will get a total of 170 questions, 20 of these questions are unscored items that are being piloted for possible inclusion as scored questions on future ASWB examinations. Thus, only 150 questions will determine whether you pass or not. However, you will never know which 20 are pilot items because they are mixed in with scored items, so you will need to try to select the right answers on all 170 questions.

Persons with disabilities will be dealt with according to their disability. Individuals who do not have English as a first language will sometimes get an extra time or foreign language dictionaries as accommodations in some states.

It is important to understand that the ASWB operates independently from your state or provincial licensing board. Some states and provinces may have additional examination or licensing requirements beyond the ASWB exam. Therefore, all candidates should consult their local regulatory board to ensure they meet all necessary requirements for their desired level of licensure.

ASWB Test Centers and ASWB Test Fees

ASWB tests will be conducted at PSI test centers. The Associate, Bachelors and Masters ASWB tests cost $230. The fee for the Advanced Generalist and Clinical ASWB exams is $260. (Note that you may have to pay additional fees to your state or jurisdiction’s licensing board.) Your board will provide the approval to take the test, and you can then register with the ASWB. 

ASWB Registration Process

A candidate has to visit the ASWB official website aswb.Org and pay the required fee amount along with his/her documentation details online. After this, a candidate will receive the ASWB Authorization to Test through email within 2 working days. Then, a candidate can proceed to schedule a test time at a PSI center, ensuring it is booked before the expiration date stated in the authorization email.
